Having said that, this position does pay comfortably above the minimum wage across Australia, with the median salary for a full-time medical receptionist $48,161 per annum according to HR website PayScale. The total salary range stretches from $37,283 for an unskilled receptionist who is just stepping into this role and up to $57,371 for a more seasoned receptionist with a few years’ experience under their belt. In wage terms, this equates to median hourly pay of $23.15 – assuming a full-time employee who works the standard 40 hour week. Pay aside, medical receptionists often enjoy additional perks through their jobs, including discounted medical treatment with their employer, premium private health insurance policies and on-the-job training in using a variety of healthcare-focused software programs.​

However, the total number of workers in this role will fall slightly from 157,100 to 156,300, largely as a result of natural attrition amongst older workers and those moving on to other positions within healthcare. Becoming a medical receptionist in Australia typically requires successful completion of your high school education (Year 12), followed by a tertiary level qualification – most commonly a Certificate II or III. Common degrees which can lead to employment in this field include the Certificate III in Business Administration (Medical) from TAFE NSW or for those looking to move up to a similar role with more responsibility, a Diploma of Practice Management from Holmesglen Institute of TAFE should suffice. Having gained valuable experience, pathways may be cleared into related roles, including Practice Managers, Officer Managers and Personal Medical Assistants.
